LAST MEYER LEMON

Post last updated: October 6th, 2018

What you see here is the very last of my 2014 crop of Meyer Lemons from my two-year-old tree. You will recall from Dingbat Certificate that I had a whopping crop of 3 lemons. I still haven’t eaten it. Being the very last one, it must, for a while, be visually savored each time I open the ‘fridge door.

    1. Loysetta – Meyer lemons are sweeter and less astringent than grocery store lemons although sheer demand for them has caused them to show up in markets like Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart Meyers are miniature compared to mine. With thin skins, they have a much shorter shelf life than the astringent varieties making them harder to transport. I’ve had two different people tell me to plant it in the ground so that it can take off. I have it in a pot so that I can drag it in and out of the greenhouse which is really too difficult for me to do, anyway, so I’m going to consult with Poppie on where I will be allowed to plant it.

  1. You know you can put it in the freezer, whole, and use the juice later…An old gypsy tip!!
    Merry Christmas!

      1. I know of someone who has a lemon tree in their house. Took a few years to produce, but it did! They’re in Missouri, similar weather and all, but it’s indoors. A lime tree, too!

    1. Meta – I don’t know about the lemon meringue pie. It’s not something I normally reach for given the opportunity. I’m a cheesecake fanatic and that requires some lemon. Mostly, when I get a lot of them, I make lemonade.

  2. I have a lemon tree that’s about 3 years old. I have gotten one lemon from that tree. I must admit I forget to feed it. The guy at the Flying Dragon says you have to feed them a lot to get lemons. Maybe I’ll do better next summer. My Mom made Lemon Ice Box pies. Maybe that will be my inspiration to grow lemons.

    1. Yes, Kimmie. Momma has a kumquat on the side of her house in way too much shade so it doesn’t produce. Maybe one a year but I have been known to eat that one and lemme tell you, it doesn’t just turn your mouth inside out. It turns your Whole Face inside out.

  3. I had never heard of a Meyer lemon until this past summer. One of my California blog friends told me about a summer drink involving ginger beer and a Meyer lemon….so I went into a nice big liquor store so they could sell it to me. I had no idea it was actually a lemon and not a flavor in a bottle. Duh…. so all that to say…this post made me smile. 😉 I hope to locate some of these the next season. Maybe Sprouts or Whole Foods?

    1. Paula — I dunno about Sprouts because we don’t have it down here and I can’t afford to shop in Whole Foods. Wal-Mart, believe it or not, sells very small Meyer lemons. Most Meyer lemons you grow yourself are almost grapefruit-sized.
